Start with the things that will shape your entire wedding: guest count, budget, location and the kind of experience you want your guests to have. Then pay attention to the things that are harder to put on a spreadsheet. How does the space feel when you walk in? Can you picture your people there? Does the venue feel like the two of you, or does it simply photograph well?

The right venue should make the rest of the wedding easier to imagine.

There is no magic number. Tour enough venues to understand what you like, what you do not and what your budget actually gets you. If every tour starts blending together, adding more venues usually does not make the decision easier.

Narrow your list before you tour. A few thoughtful visits can tell you much more than trying to see every wedding venue in Philadelphia.

Look past the room itself. Think about how guests arrive, where the ceremony happens, how cocktail hour flows into the reception, where your wedding party gets ready and what the backup plan looks like if weather changes.

Ask about capacity, accessibility, parking and transportation, catering and bar requirements, rentals, vendor restrictions, timing and anything that could become an additional cost. The logistics matter just as much as the first impression.

This can vary dramatically from venue to venue, which is why the starting price rarely tells the whole story. Ask what is included in the rental or package and what will be added later.

Furniture, linens, staffing, catering, bar service, ceremony space, rentals, security, setup, breakdown and service charges can all affect the real cost. Compare venues based on the full picture, not just the first number you are given.

Either order can work. If you already know the venue you love, you can absolutely book it first. If you are overwhelmed by options, working with a planner earlier can help you narrow the search, understand costs and evaluate spaces through the lens of the wedding you actually want to create.
